Black Heart, Ivory Bones by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling

This is the last of a series of anthologies featuring adult retellings of classic fairy tales. I've not read the others in the series (yet) but I did enjoy this edition which features twenty stories by the likes of Joyce Carol Oates, Neil Gaiman, Charles De Lint, Tanith Lee, Jane Yolen, Susanna Clarke, and others.

As with most short story collections, this was a mixed bag of quality. Overall the stories are good, interesting reads. Some of the better ones were 'And Still She Sleeps' (archaeologists discover Sleeping Beauty still in her enchanted slumber), 'Chanterelle' (incorporates Hansel and Gretel, the Nightingale, and other fairy tale elements), 'My Life as a Bird' (urban story with elements of Rumplestiltskin, The Fisherman and His Wife, and others), 'The Cats of San Martino', and 'Mr. Simonelli or the Fairy Widower' (skewed version of Midwife to the Fairies).

Overall Rating: 7/10
